Big Lottery Fund
The Big lottery has confirmed an award of £7100 to the rowing section for the purchase of equipment to enable us to proceed with our youth Development Project. Today, the 3rd of May we have confirmation the BACS transfer of funds has happened.
This follows a “Dragons Den” type presentation at the Princess Hall on the 30th January this year where 3 of our rowers were one of 10 groups making a bid for funds to a live audience and a panel of expert assessors.
We mean to offer affordable open access to healthy outdoor physical activity in a challenging but structured safe environment, where young people can have fun while learning to work together as a team.
The confirmation letter explains the award is a mark of quality of work we are doing in the community and they will keep in touch during the life of the project. A copy of the award letter is attached and we will of course keep everyone informed as we prepare to launch the project.
As everyone is no doubt aware we have recently re painted and re named our Wooden Racing Gig “Brue”; the rowers wanted a clear local connection, and opted to recognise the historic contribution the river made to the development of Burnham and Highbridge. We are currently finalising details for a formal naming, blessing and launching ceremony led by the Lord Mayor of Burnham and Highbridge.
We are now actively recruiting new members and offering taster sessions for interested people and will be launching from the Town Beach.
Nationally rowing attracts a lot of women to the sport and they represent more than half the sport’s regular rowers. Our Gig club would wish to reflect the national trend so we are keen to offer taster rowing sessions, and we already have male crew ,mixed crews and all girl crew too.
Lots of people while on holiday in Cornwall will have seen these boats either on the beach or with 6 people leaning backward and forward all in time so smoothly. It is an exciting and exhilarating sport that provides an all systems body workout when we pit our strength and coordination against the sea whilst exercising a healthy respect for her too.
Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing is now well established in our area and as affiliated members of the Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing Association we can participate in the whole range of activities from recreational rowing to elite sports rowing.
We can regularly be seen from the sea front and we invite anyone interested to come over and have a chat as we launch or recover from the Beach.
Our recently developed links with Clevedon Gigs, the Regional Centre of excellence, is helping us develop our skills and knowledge by giving us access to very skilled and experienced coxswains and coaches.
We recently joined 5 other gigs and completed our second “Long Row”, from Bristol Harbour Marina to Clevedon Pier, a distance of 15 miles, with unrivalled views along the Avon Gorge and the North Somerset Coast.
Rowing is well known as one of the most effective low impact forms of exercise and working together as a team it can be fun, why don’t you, your children or your grand children give it a go?
