The Ghostly Story of Bethany-Anne

Bethany-Anne Pic - The Jonah Boat

Washed up from Penarth in 1976 the former navy vessel known then as Black Swan had broke free from it's mooring swinging round hard against the harbour wall before crushing the owners wife leg.

This is a tale of ghoulish happenings and the boat has subsequently gained the title of a 'Jonah'. In nautical terms this translate to bad luck and something that brings trouble.

When the boat broke free from Penarth in 1976 it was varried by the tidal stream of the Bristol Channel eventually ending up in Sand Bay, Weston-super-Mare where it remained for some time buried in the gravel bed of the beach.

A fisherman from Weston took pity on her several months later and through great effort dug suitable channels in the beach, chained her up on tow and waited for the spring tide.

Once afloat the engine was able to be started and under motor she was taken to her current location in the river Brue in Burnham On Sea.

The former owner in Penarth was tracked down although was adamant that she was not to be returned and transfer of ownership was therefore granted.

During ownership she was taken to Bristol for the purpose of a full restoration albeit within months she had returned to her home in the Brue and was renamed 'Bethany-Anne'. Some may say that it is bad luck to change a boats name...

There are further stories reported including tales of man-over-board, accidents on board leading to broken bones through other owners that had taken her on.

She has sat on the bank of the Brue since 1976 and despite many efforts to bring her back to life she remains with a ghostly presence.
